M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank And Its Family - How They Are The Different

M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank Family

This was the modern tank for the United States military in the 1980s as M1 Abrams and this is also the modern tank for the US military in 2010s as M1A2 SEPv2 Abrams, a highly upgraded version of the Abrams family.
Between the very first version (M1) and the highly upgraded version (M1A2 SEPv2) up to now, there were M1IP, M1A1, M1A2, M1A2 SEP and M1A2 SEPv2 versions of the Abrams family.
Before M1 Abrams, the M60 was the leading tank of the US military. The American military faced many difficulties in the manufacturing of M1 Abrams because 2 different concept tanks were proposed and then discarded before the concept of the M1 Abrams. When the M1 Abrams was in the making process, Germans were also producing their main battle tank, Leopard 2.
In the following post, only M1A2 SEPv2 Abrams is discussed.  As it is highly upgraded version and contains all the good characteristics of its all previous versions.

M1 Abrams Tank Common Specs

All the M1s and its next versions have a turbine engine which can be powered by different fuels. This engine delivers the 1500 horsepower to the tank. This M1 Abrams had a 105 mm rifled main gun but all successors to the M1 Abrams carry a 120 mm smooth bore main gun.
There was a crew of four members in the M1IP, M1A1, M1A2 but in the latest versions, there is a crew of 3 men. The position of the loader is eliminated thanks to the auto-loader system.
The fuel consumption of Abrams depends upon the terrains and missions. It can travel about 1 Km in a gallon in the smooth area. When it comes to operation in the natural terrain, it consumes 1 gallon in a minute. And when the mine plow is attached in front of it, its consumption of fuel increases more.

M1 Different Specs

All the higher models except M1s and M1IPs were configured with the high armor materials turret and hull. The filters of nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological are also placed in the body of the tanks.
All the models after M1A2 main battle tank (including M1A2 ) were equipped with the better fire control system, tank's navigation system, and thermal viewing system.
In M1A2 SEP and all models after it, the commander was provided with the independent thermal sighting system and FLIR systems are installed that helps in operating the SEP model all day and night.
The M1A2 SEPv2 model was provided with an amazing system by which the operator can engage the target while sitting inside the tank which was not present in SEP version.
The SEPv2 body is armored with the depleted uranium plating. This uranium plating is covered within the steel alloy that everyone sees as the tank body. The commander, loader, and gunner are safeguarded in the turret while the driver sits in the hull.

The additional weapons are the anti-aircraft machine gun and the 2 anti-troop machine guns. One machine gun is mounted with the main gun and the other is mounted inside the tank near the loader side. This machine gun is controlled by the loader from the inside without moving its body outside the tank. The Abrams tank firing is shown in the following image. The highly upgraded models of Abrams have the maximum effective range of about 5 Km to hit the target.

M1 Abrams was light weight, about 63 tons, as compared to its next higher models. Due to low weight, M1 speed was higher among all of its family tanks. The increased weight of the today's models of M1 Abrams is due to the armored protection. But the speed of the tank does not matter as compared to protection in today's world. So, M1 Abrams latest versions are the better.
